Retrofit and Rehabilitation Using Advanced Composite Materials

Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have been in structural engineer's toolbox for more than 20 years as an option when existing structural members need strengthening. The focus of this presentation is to cover the basics of FRP design, with common applications and details, as well as discuss briefly some newer details validated through testing, like FRP anchors.
The presentation will conclude with some seismic retrofit case studies from New Zealand, comparing damage levels of buildings with and without FRP-strengthening after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake suffered there in November 2016.
Bio: Scott Arnold, P.E. is the Director of Engineering Solutions at Fyfe Company. He has been working with Fyfe Company for over twenty-four years on the design and development of various advanced composite strengthening systems. He is a licensed civil engineer in the states of California, Texas, Hawaii, Florida & Maryland and has worked directly on the design of thousands of rehabilitation projects. Scott has a Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of California at San Diego.
